A Perfect 3-Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary: Solo Travel Travel Guide and Destination Guide For Italy

With its cascading cliffs, bright blue waters, and postcard-worthy villages, the Amalfi Coast is a dream destination that tops bucket lists around the globe. This 3-day Amalfi Coast itinerary is designed to help you experience the best of this stunning coastal region in Italy. Whether you’re a Roman Emperor, a movie star, a hiker, or an artist, the Amalfi Coast has something to captivate your heart.

Where Exactly is the Amalfi Coast?

The Amalfi Coast stretches along the southern portion of the Sorrentine peninsula in Campania, Italy. Framed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, this roughly 50-kilometer coastline is a paradise of dramatic landscapes, charming towns, and Mediterranean beauty. While technically places like Capri, Sorrento, and Salerno are not part of the “true” Amalfi Coast, the winding highway that runs from Sorrento to Salerno serves as the gateway to this enchanting region.

Day 1: Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello

1. Positano

● Morning in Positano: Start your day with a leisurely breakfast at a local café. Try a traditional cornetto (Italian croissant) paired with a cappuccino. The views of the colorful houses cascading down the cliffs are simply breathtaking.

● Beach Time: Rent an umbrella and spend a few hours sunbathing on Spiaggia Grande, Positano's main beach. The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming.

● Lunch with a View: Head to a cliffside restaurant for lunch. Da Adolfo is a hidden gem accessible by boat, where you can enjoy fresh seafood and stunning vistas.

● Explore the Streets: Wander through Positano's narrow streets lined with boutiques, ceramic shops, and art galleries. Don't miss the iconic Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its majolica-tiled dome.

2. Amalfi

● Amalfi Cathedral: Visit the Duomo di Sant'Andrea, a 9th-century cathedral with a stunning staircase. The bronze doors are a masterpiece.

● Museum of Paper: Learn about Amalfi's historic paper-making industry at the Museo della Carta. Discover how they produced paper using medieval techniques.

● Villa Rufolo: Explore the beautiful gardens and terraces of Villa Rufolo, which inspired Wagner's opera "Parsifal."

● Coral Museum: Discover the art of coral jewelry at the Museo del Corallo. Admire intricate pieces made from red coral harvested in the nearby sea.

● Terrazza dell’Infinito: End your Amalfi visit with a walk to Villa Cimbrone and its famous Terrazza dell’Infinito (Infinity Terrace). The views are otherworldly.

3. Ravello

● Villa Cimbrone: Spend the afternoon exploring the gardens of Villa Cimbrone. The Belvedere of Infinity offers panoramic views of the coastline.

● Villa Rufolo: Visit Villa Rufolo if you haven't already. The gardens here are equally enchanting.

● Local Cuisine: Enjoy dinner at a traditional trattoria in Ravello. Try dishes like scialatielli ai frutti di mare (homemade pasta with seafood) or melanzane alla parmigiana (eggplant Parmesan).

Day 2: Day Trip to Capri

● Ferry to Capri: Catch an early morning ferry from Amalfi or Positano to Capri. The journey takes about an hour.

● Capri Town: Explore the charming streets of Capri Town. Visit the Church of Santa Maria Assunta with its famous blue-tiled dome.

● Monte Solaro: Take the chairlift up to Monte Solaro for panoramic views of the island and the Bay of Naples.

● Anacapri: Head to Anacapri, the quieter side of Capri. Visit Villa San Michele and its beautiful gardens.

● Arienzo Beach: If time allows, relax on Arienzo Beach. The turquoise waters are irresistible.

Day 3: Choose Your Adventure

Option 1: Relax on the Amalfi Coast

● Beach Day: Spend a leisurely day at the beach. Pack a picnic, rent a sunbed, and soak up the sun. The Amalfi Coast boasts several beautiful beaches, each with its own charm. Consider visiting Fornillo Beach in Positano, known for its tranquil atmosphere and clear waters. Alternatively, head to Marina Grande Beach in Amalfi, where colorful fishing boats line the shore.

● Swim in Furore: For a unique experience, visit the Fiordo di Furore, a hidden fjord located between Amalfi and Positano. Descend the steep staircase to reach the small beach nestled within the cliffs. The emerald waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

● Sunset Aperitivo: As the day winds down, treat yourself to an evening aperitivo. Find a cliffside bar with panoramic views and sip on a refreshing limoncello spritz while watching the sunset over the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Option 2: Explore Pompeii

● Day Trip to Pompeii: If history fascinates you, take a guided tour to the ancient city of Pompeii. Once a bustling Roman town, it was buried under volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. Walk through the well-preserved ruins, marvel at the ancient amphitheater, and imagine life in this once-thriving city. Don't miss the Villa of the Mysteries, famous for its vivid frescoes.

● Mount Vesuvius: For the adventurous souls, consider hiking up Mount Vesuvius itself. The volcano's crater offers panoramic views of the Bay of Naples and the surrounding landscape. Remember to wear comfortable shoes and carry water for the ascent.

Where to Stay

Choose accommodations in Positano, Amalfi, or Ravello based on your preferences. Here are some recommendations:

● Positano: Stay at the iconic Le Sirenuse, a luxurious hotel perched on the cliffs with stunning sea views. The infinity pool is a must-visit.

● Amalfi: Hotel Santa Caterina is a charming option, known for its elegant rooms and lush gardens. Enjoy breakfast overlooking the azure waters.

● Ravello: For a boutique experience, consider Palazzo Avino (formerly Palazzo Sasso). Its Michelin-starred restaurant, Rossellinis, is a culinary delight.

Getting Around

● Local Buses: Use the SITA buses to travel between towns. These buses connect Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, making it convenient to explore the coast.

● Ferries: Consider taking ferries between towns for a scenic ride. The views from the water are spectacular.

● Private Drivers: If you prefer a more personalized experience, hire a private driver to take you around. They can navigate the winding roads while you sit back and enjoy the vistas.

More Than 3 Days on the Amalfi Coast?

If you have additional time, consider exploring lesser-known towns like Vietri sul Mare, Minori, or Cetara. Each has its own unique charm and adds depth to your Amalfi Coast experience.

What to Pack for this 3-Day Amalfi Coast Itinerary

● Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the Mediterranean sun.

● Comfortable Shoes: You'll be doing a lot of walking, especially on cobblestone streets.

● Swimsuit: Don't miss the chance to swim in those azure waters.

● Camera: Capture the stunning views and colorful architecture.

● Appetite: Enjoy the delicious Italian cuisine – from fresh seafood to homemade pasta.

Remember, the Amalfi Coast is not just a destination; it's a sensory journey that will stay with you long after you've left its shores . Buon viaggio!
